BACK TO PT. REYES

On Thursday we headed back to Pt. Reyes National Seashore. This time to Limantour Beach, which is in the Phillip Burton Wilderness Area. Limantour is a particularly nice beach. Broad and flat and hardly anyone there. Really nice for walking and cavorting. Mom did the walking I did the cavorting.

The biggest excitement of the day was spotting an American Bittern. They are members of the heron family. This bird has the ugliest feet. They are huge, yellow and have what look like claws. Really, the strangest feet on a bird I ever did see!

Friday we drove north with the idea of going to the Russian River. Despite all the storms the river was pretty low. The water was muddy and not very picturesque. We ended up in Guerneville and Armstrong Park. As usual hiking for us was pretty restricted. The dog thing don't you know. But, it is a pretty park in the midst of beautiful big redwoods and certainly worth the visit.

Ooops! I loaded the photos in reverse order! Sorry about that!

Sauvie Island/The Oregon Coast

Yesterday there was one heck of a storm that blew through Portland. We braved the elements and went to Sauvie Island. There is a wildlife refuge there but it was closed, except to hunters. We wandered the roads but the good stuff was in the closed area. I can only imagine what a great time I would have hiking in this place. I really hope mom comes back sometime when it's open. It rained and the wind blew a gale the whole time. But, apparently, it was nothing compared to what was going on over on the coast where they were getting gusts up to 100 mph.

Bright and early this morning we hit the road for the coast. Mom nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to navigate the route to Hwy 26. Mom says the interchanges around Portland are the most confusing she has ever seen. We took a few wrong turns but finally made it to 26.

The drive over to the coast is very pretty. Once we got here we found that lotsa stuff is closed because of the storm. Ebola Park for one. It's supposed to be an awesome place for views. Mom took me down to the beach for a run. Golly, it was fabulous. I just went crazy running every whicha way. I really like the beach!!! You can see from the photo that the waves were still pretty heavy. After my frolic we drove up the coast towards Astoria. Every place mom tried for a hike was closed because of the storm and fallen trees. Well, maybe we will have better luck tomorrow!

Until next time ...

THE VET, LAKE KOOCANUSA & A CHEROKEE TALE

Well, my mom sure snookered me this morning. She asked me if I wanted to "go". That's about as dumb a question as "Do ducks fly?". But, I humored her by doing my spinning thing and other whirling dervish moves to indicate me approval. Away we went.

The next thing I know I'm in the vet's office. I used to like going there because the people are nice and I like people. Not anymore! I finally figured out those sweet smiling faces always mean somebody is going to stick something in me. Admittedly, today wasn't too bad. What I got was bordetella nose drops. Usually, this is what you get for kennel cough before you get boarded. But, mom makes me take it because we travel so much and no telling whose nose I'll be bumping into. I generally bump into all the noses I can find!

I must admit, I was pretty good about the whole thing so my reward was a trip to a trail we know over at Rexford. This trail takes you along a bluff overlooking Lake Koocanusa. You can also take side trails down to the water if you want. I want. So, we went.

Mom, calls the Koocanusa the lake "of many faces". You just never know what it's going to look like.

Lake Koocanusa

Oh, nearly forgot, mom asked me to include this story she got today from an old school chum. It's a Native American tale called "Two Wolves" and it goes like this.........

" One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all..

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Lotsa wisdom in that story don't you think?

Until next time.........
